After publicly humiliating his pregnant wife at Harrenhal, many wonder if the gallant prince Rhaegar Targaryen is indeed as mad as his father. His behavior only becomes more erratic and troubling. He babbles incessantly about a prophecy and a promised prince and a three-headed dragon. He barely even registers the birth of his son and heir, all he can talk about is “needing one more dragon.” The maesters are at a loss to explain his condition, and his loving wife is beside herself with worry, as his mental state and physical health deteriorate. After his untimely death, no one even thinks to suspect that his loyal, dutiful, grieving widow might be responsible.
